The 2009 Clay Invitational was a great success for the Bedford Boys Teams. Both the varsity and JV squads won the team titles. This was the first varsity team win since South Lyon in 2006 when this year's senior class were freshman. The varsity race started out with a lot of red "B's" out front. Nick Kaiser, Derek Hibbs, and Tommy Valade ran together early in the race with a second pack of Bedford runners a bit further back including Adam Horace, Troy Tidwell, Chad Machinski, Jake Nye, and Cory Schoendorf. Nick pulled away from his teammates to finish second overall behind Delta's Colin Fisher who ran away with the race from the start. Derek Hibbs ran great and finished 4th overall. Tommy Valade took a brief spill coming around the corner of the Shelter House but managed to finish in 5th place. Sophomore Jake Nye moved way up in the Mule Pack today and was the fourth man. Coming in as a tight pack were Troy, Adam, Chad, and Cory. Senior Zach Morgan ran varsity for the first time in his career today and although he did not run as fast as he wanted, was excited to get to finally wear the Big Red B. For everyone who has watched Zach progress over his four years, it was awesome to see him finally get his chance. Nobody has worked harder than Zach and he has improved almost 10 minutes since he was a freshman.
The JV team was not to be outdone and scored less than half as many points in winning as the varsity. They clearly dominated this race going 4th (Brandon Benore), 5th (Kyle Thomas), 6th (Ben Wexler), 7th (Steven Scherer), and 8th (Ben Crane) to finish with 30 points. The entire team ran great with everybody under 20:02 and in the top third of the race.
