The boys opened the season at the South Lyon Invitational on Saturday. The varsity finished 2nd to a strong Novi team. Three 2008 All State runners led throughout the race. Senior Kyle Roche (Walled Lake Central - 18th D1 Finals) pulled away in the final 2000 meters to easily win the individual championship. Tommy Valade (27th D1 Finals) and Michael Blaszczyk (Novi, 19th D1 Finals) dueled the final 2k with Tommy easing ahead at the end for second place. Nick Kaiser ran most of the second half of the race by himself, never challenged, and finished in 4th place. Derek Hibbs ran a great race and finished in 8th place just behind two runners he competed with over the last half of the race. Cory Schoendorf (26th place), Adam Horace (27th place), and Troy Tidwell (28th place) ran the entire race together and finished in a tight pack. Chad Machinski had a tough day (38th place) still finishing in the top half of the race. In the JV race, the Kickin' Mules easily won the team competition. Sophomore Jake Nye went out with the leaders and hung with them for the first 2K. He lost touch with the eventual winner but was able to hang with the other Canton runner until he was outkicked at the end. Jake's 3rd place finish was a great start to his second season and moves him up to the varsity for Tiffin. Senior Zach Morgan ran great (8th place) showing what hard work over four years can produce. Steven Scherer, Jack Perry, and Kyle Thomas also ran well. Freshmen Ben Wexler (19th place) and Dillon Thompson (21st) had excellent debuts. Ben Crane went out with the leaders and looked strong early on before fading to 23rd place.
