Bedford Cross Country News
2008
11/25/2008
Bedford graduate Loren Ahonen (2006) competed in the Division II National
Championships this past weekend. The following was sent in by Coach Masters.
Hello All-
I just came back from Slippery Rock, PA, where I went to
watch Loren Ahonen ('06) run in the DII NCAA National Cross Country
Championships. The Bedford program is alive and well in college after
witnessing an incredible performance from Loren. The course was hilly and
snow covered; Slippery Rock received about 4 inches of snow 36 hours before
the race. The temperature was in the mid 20's with a biting wind chill. That
didn't matter to Loren and his Western State Colorado team. Loren passed
the first mile behind 40 of the best DII runners in the nation. From there he
began to use his hill strength to chip away at the field and put himself in
17th position for the last mile. Loren still wasn't finished; he pushed the
last mile and caught 5 more for an awesome 12th place finish in a phenomenal
time of 31:38 in terrible racing conditions.
This helped WSC to a runner-up finish in the NCAA
Championships...not too bad!
Loren is now the second runner to earn NCAA All-American
honors behind Mike Wisniewski ('96).
Take care,
Bob

Bob Andrews Booster Award: Tommy Valade
Rookie Award: Adam Horace
Gerry Lindgren Award (coach's award): Andrew Althaus

11/12/2008 Andrew Althaus
participated at the Mid-East Meet of Champions qualifier this past Sunday in
Jackson, Michigan. Only seniors are eligible to compete in this event.
Andrew's father reports that the weather was dreadful; 35 degrees, wind, rain,
and snow. Andrew was hoping for a PR to finish his career but the elements did
not cooperate. His time was 18:07 for the 5K course. Congratulations once again
to Andrew for a solid senior year, helping lead Bedford to the first state
appearance in 6 years. (Full

11/1/2008 MHSAA State Finals
Recap. The Bedford Boys CC Team competed at the Lower Peninsula Finals
(State Meet) today. The Mules finished 22nd out of the 27 teams that qualified
for the Finals. This was the first appearance since 2002 for the Boys Team.
Congratulations to Coach Masters and the entire team for achieving their primary
goal for the season. This was the final race for two seniors, Jordan Call and
Andrew Althaus. They both ran PRs today in the biggest races of their careers!
Jordan, Bedford's third runner for the day, ran 16:59.0 (finally breaking the 17
minute barrier) finishing in 121st place (162 overall). This was a great
way to finish the season after fighting injuries his entire junior year.
Andrew was Bedford's fifth scoring runner today with a time of 17:13.4 and
finishing in 142nd place (189 overall). Andrew is the quiet leader of this team
and will be missed next year. Tommy Valade finished 27th overall earning All
State honors. Nick Kaiser returned to form just in time and ran a PR of 16:27.8.
He finished in 59th place in the team race and was the ninth fastest sophomore
in the race. Chad Machinski was fourth runner for Bedford today in a time of
17:11.2. This was 139th place (186 overall). Chad had a very consistent year on
the varsity carrying through on his big breakthrough last spring on the track.
Derek Hibbs ran 17:20.0 and was the sixth runner for the Mules. He finished in
150th place (198 overall). Troy Tidwell completed the Bedford roster for the
day. He ran 17:29.1 and finished in 162nd place (210 overall). With 3 juniors
and 2 sophomores getting experience running in this meet, Bedford can look
forward to improving on this performance next year. [MHSAA

In the girls race Kate and Kelsey Calhoun competed for
Bedford. Kelsey finished in 115th place with a time of 19:52.7. Kate finished in
125th place with a time of 19:56.3. Congratulations to these very hard working
sisters. Kate completes a very successful cross country career at BHS.
The SEC had another very good day at the State Finals. The
Boys SEC Red Division once again showed its dominance in the state for the 2008
year. AA Pioneer won the championship easily with four All State performances.
AA Huron once again came through when it counts and finished in 5th place.
Saline finished 9th despite running without their co-number one runner the last
half of the season due to injury. Monroe (joins the league next fall) finished
in 10th place. 7 of the 30 All State runners were from the SEC.
10/29/2008 Only 3 more days until
the big race! The team is leaving the High School Saturday at 11 am. The varsity
will be traveling with Coach Masters. The parents will caravan from there also.
Any team members, boys or girls, who want to go to the meet can get rides to MIS
with the parents. Hope to see EVERYBODY there to cheer on the team. There
is a $7.00 entry fee at MIS. The Running Club/parents are arranging for food at
the meet.
Troy Tidwell was left left out of the original review of the
Regional Meet below. Troy, a sophomore, has been a key member of the varsity all
year and was the 7th man for the Mules this past weekend. Expect to see Troy do
very well this weekend at the Finals.
10/27/2008 The SEC had an awesome
weekend at the MHSAA Regionals. All four division 1 teams in the SEC
Red Boys Division qualified for the State Meet. Saline (1st, region
1-4), Bedford (3rd,region 1-4), AA Pioneer (1st, region 1-5), AA Huron (2nd,
region 1-5) will represent our league on Saturday. I don't think any other
league in the state can say all the teams qualified for the Finals. Pioneer
remains the favorite to win a state title. Boys teams from the SEC White
Division that qualified are Tecumseh (1st, region 2-17) and Chelsea (2nd, region
2-16).
On the girls side, five teams from the SEC qualified for the
State Finals. Saline (1st, region 1-4), AA Huron (2nd, region 1-5), AA Pioneer
(3rd, region 1-5), Dexter (1st, region 2-16), and Tecumseh (3rd, region2-17).
The Bedford girls team missed out on qualifying by only 3 points! I know Coach
Davis is disappointed that he can't take his entire team to MIS. The Calhouns
will be there to carry on the tradition of the girl's program.
The results of this past weekend once again show the strength
of the SEC.

qualified for the State
Meet next week (officially known as the Lower Peninsula Finals).
Congratulations to the boys for their hard work and attaining the major team
goal for the year. The pack of runners from Bedford in their new uniforms
was quite a sight to see. Bedford put all seven runners in the top 24 for the
race. Tommy Valade led the team with a first place finish. Congratulations Tommy
on being the Regional Champion. Nick Kaiser returned to form and finished
in 12th place. Derek Hibbs (15th), Jordan Call (16th), Andrew Althaus (18th),
and Chad Machinski (19th) all ran great and were the difference in the race
allowing Bedford to easily qualify for next weeks State Finals. Troy Tidwell
(24th) rounded out the squad for Bedford. SEC Conference
foe Saline won a very close team race over Monroe by way of the sixth man tie
breaker, once again proving the cross country mantra that "every place counts".
Congratulations to Coach Spina and Saline for their victory. Corey Schoendorf
finished a strong sophomore year by finishing third in the Open Race (further
details on the Open Race when available).
The Bedford Girls team finished in 4th place missing out on a
trip to the State Finals by only a few points! Kate and Kelsy Calhoun qualified
as individuals for next week. Congratulations to the Calhoun girls and good luck
next week (full results).

10/16/2008 The
SEC Jamboree #3 (click
link for full results) was held today. The Mules finished in 4th place in
the final Jamboree of the season. Bedford was led once again by Tommy
Valade who finished runner up (15:48, fifth fastest all time) for the league
title to Pioneer's senior Dan Culbertson. Tommy was in the lead pack for the
entire race only to be outkicked by Culbertson in the last 100 meters. This was
Culbertson's second league championship, he also won two years ago. Pioneer
easily won the league championship as expected for the Michigan #1 division 1
team. Chad Machinski ran well today and was the second finisher for Bedford.

yet updated to reflect the most recent races.
10/4/2008 The Bedford Boys CC team
finished 10th out of 40 teams today at the
Portage Invitational. The Mules were led by
Tommy Valade who tied the school record at 15:40 (24 second PR) and finished in third place
individually. The school record is also held by Jesse Elzinga, who ran this time
back in 1994 (click on link for entire list of
Legends). This ended quite a week for Tommy
with 3rd place last Saturday at Clay and 1st place on Tuesday at the SEC
Jamboree #2 (the first Bedford boy to ever win an SEC Jamboree. The rest of the
varsity also had a very good day with PRs for everybody. The 10th place team
finish is quite an improvement from last year when Bedford finished 20th.
The Bedford HS Girls CC team finished 13th out of 33 schools.
Freshman Kelsey Calhoun led the squad in 36th place winning a medal. Kate
Calhoun just missed out on a medal in 53rd place. [full results -

9/30/2008 Here is an interesting
post from the Mlive cross country forum. The discussion is about the upcoming
Portage Middle School race as a window on the future high school stars in
Michigan.
Look for the future of Michigan’s elite runners to very possibly rise to
the surface at this weekend’s Boys Portage Middle School race.
Many of the past top runners at the Portage Middle School race went on
to good running careers in college, after achieving admirable running
accomplishments in high school.
The most successful middle school runner in the history of the Portage
Meet has to be Dan Roberts. He placed 2nd in the 2001 middle school race
behind Loren Ahonen – Bedford MS. Dan went on to qualify twice for the
Footlocker National CC Meet, finishing in 12th place as a Sr. with a time of
15:27, holds the 2nd fastest time (15:05.3) among all high school participants
in Portage Meet history, behind our own Dathan Ritzenhein. Dan was the 2004 D2
State CC champion with a time of 15:19.05, 2004 D2 1600m champion 4:13.83,
2004 D2 3200m track champion 9:18.48. He is now a college junior running at
Florida State University.
Jay Bilsborrow placed 3rd behind Dan Roberts in the 2001 middle school
race and in 2006 went on to set a D2 State Meet record in the 800m 1:53.63 and
was the D2 State 1600m champion 4:14. Jay is currently a sophomore running for
William & Mary.
So if Loren Ahonen beat both Dan Roberts and Jay Bilsborrow in the 2001
middle school race, what ever became of Loren’s running accomplishments? Well
Loren went on to run 15:57 as a Bedford H.S. Sr.at the 2005 Regional Cross
Country Meet, has the 5th fastest 1600m time (4:23) in Bedford H.S. history
and ran a 9:39.63 - 3200m the following spring at the 2006 State Track Meet
finals earning D1 All State honors. Loren is now running for Western Colorado
University.
In the 2004 middle school race, Tommy Brinn placed 3rd and went on to
set a D2 State Track Meet 800m record last spring as an Otsego H.S. Jr.
running a 1:51.76 only to top that two weeks later winning the Midwest
Distance Gala at Benedictine University in a time of 1:51.07; competing
against talented runners from 15 other states. This year as a senior, he ran
16:05 last weekend at the Otsego Bulldog Invitational. Too bad Otesgo H.S.
will not be participating at this year’s Portage Meet!!
Here is a list of recent Middle School race winners and their
accomplishments thus far in their early high school careers:
2005 Middle School Champion – Andrew Harper is now a Saline H.S. junior.
He a ran 10:06.9 -3200m as a Sophmore at last year’s regional track meet and
ran to a 9th place finish recently at the Jackson Invitational; finishing in a
time of 16:20.
Tommy Valade finished over 23 seconds behind Andrew Harper in 2005’s
middle school race. Last year he set PR’s of 4:36 – 1600mm and 2:01 – 800m as
a sophomore on the track. He also qualified for the State Track Meet last
spring with a time of 9:41.1 – 3200m. This year as a Bedford H.S. Jr. he ran a
16:11 at the Spartan Invitational a few weeks ago.
2006 Middle School Champion – Nick Kaiser followed up his victory the
following Spring 2007 as a Bedford H.S. Freshman running an incredible 51.8
sec - 400m and went on to earn All State honors last Spring 2007 finishing 6th
at D1 State Track Meet with an 800m time of 1:56.73.
So you might want to watch the Portage Middle School race a little more
closely this weekend. It might reveal an emerging talent for which we can all
keep a watchful eye and hope for the best!!
9/27/2008 Bedford competed in the
Clay Eagle
Invitational today. The Boys Varsity
finished 2nd by only 6 points. The JV team also finished second. The Girls
Varsity finished in 3rd place led by a third place finish from freshman Kelsey
Calhoun. The Junior high school girls finished second and the boys finished 5th.
Next up is the SEC
Jamboree #2 on Tuesday September 30th. Click on
the link for details. Next Saturday is the trip to Portage. This is one of the
premier CC meets in the state of Michigan.
9/16/2008 Bedford has the next two weeks
off before the next race. The boys will be training hard during this time to
prepare for the next stretch of the season: Clay, SEC Jamboree #2, and
Portage. Last Friday, the team participated in the
MSU Spartan
Invitational. The varsity placed 11th out of 25 teams in the NIKE
Elite Division. The Bedford Junior High
Girls
were champions and the
Boys were 3rd.
This Thursday is the first Community Education cross country
meet for the elementary school aged kids. Head out to Indian Creek to cheer on
the future stars of the BHS CC Team. (Community
Education schedule)
The state rankings for this week are out. AA Pioneer (#2) and
Saline (#3) represent the SEC Red Division in the
current rankings.
9/10/2008 Three teams from our
division of the SEC are ranked in the top 10 for Division 1 in Michigan. Pioneer
(tied#1), Saline (tied #1) and Huron (#10) are all ranked. Bedford has beaten
Huron twice already this year. Right now, Pioneer appears to be the strongest
team in Michigan. In Division 2, SEC foe Chelsea is ranked #3, and Dexter is
honorable mention. Once again, the SEC is one of the strongest leagues in the
state and competition at the Jamborees is intense. (Full
rankings)
