The Mules kicked off the 2009 season at the Gold W Relays. Nick Kaiser stole the show with two incredible performances. There was little doubt that Nick was going to take down the 800 meter record this year, just a matter of when. With the cool (ahem, COLD) breezy weather, fast times were unlikely on this day. The first running event of the day was the 3200 meter relay. This relay is traditionally the strong suit of the Bedford track team but has not been up to par the last few years. Derek Hibbs ran the first leg with a PR of 2:08.x. Tommy Valade ran a solid 2:00.x second leg moving the team from 5th to 2nd place. Chad Machinski ran third, 2:06.x, maintaining 2nd place. Nick Kaiser received the baton about 40 meters behind the leader. He maintained that position for the first 400 and then exploded down the backstretch of the second lap, passing the runner from Clay, and taking the lead. Nick finished strong down the home straightaway pulling ahead by about 20 meters. His anchor leg was 1:54.x. The final time of 8:09.5 was a great effort this early in the season (the state qualifying standard is 8:09). Tommy Valade ran a PR of 4:33.17 in the 1600 meter run and finished in second place. Newcomer Ian Fleetwood started out like gangbusters in the 400 meter run and hung on for second place. This was a great first effort for Ian who was running on a bad leg injured while long jumping earlier. Nick Kaiser was back a little bit later for the 800 meter run. This was going to be a battle of two of the best 800 meter runners in the region. Moise Frisch of Whitmer was one of the fastest runners in Ohio last spring finishing fourth in the state finals. Nick finished 6th last year in the state meet as a freshman. The race met expectations. Nick and Mo ran stride for stride for the entire race. Nick was just ahead of Mo the last 500 meters of the race and maintained his position for the win. His time, 1:55.3, was a school and meet record. Congratulations to Nick on his great effort. Derek Hibbs came back in the 3200 to finish third with a PR.
